Kansas City will not just be one of the host cities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For the Argentina national team, it will become the operational home of the defending world champions during a major part of the tournament.
Argentina, led by Lionel Scaloni and headlined by Lionel Messi, has chosen Kansas City as its main base for the World Cup. The decision goes beyond the team’s opening match against Algeria. It is tied to training infrastructure, hotel logistics, recovery spaces, travel planning and the possibility of building custom facilities for one of the most demanding national teams in world soccer.
According to the information provided by AFA, the choice came after several inspection trips led by physical trainer Luis Martín, assistant physical trainer Juan Tamone, and administrative officials Daniel Cabrera and Alberto Pernas. After a final report, Kansas City was considered the ideal location because of travel distances and, above all, the comfort and facilities available for the delegation.

Kansas City is building Argentina’s World Cup home
One of the key details in Argentina’s plan is the construction and adaptation of specific facilities for the squad. At the Origin Hotel, the team’s chosen hotel during the tournament, materials have already arrived to build an exclusive gym for the players.
That is a major part of the operation. A World Cup base is not only about where players sleep. It has to support daily activation work, strength sessions, injury prevention, recovery, medical routines and privacy. For a team defending a world title, controlling those details can be decisive.
Argentina also plans to expand the setup at its training center. Beyond the gym already available at the facility, the staff is preparing to build another gym in the parking area. A tent for family visits is also part of the plan, giving the delegation a more controlled and comfortable environment during the tournament.
The idea is clear: Argentina wants Kansas City to feel as close as possible to its regular working environment at AFA’s training complex in Ezeiza.

Why Argentina chose Kansas City over Dallas
At first, the decision may seem surprising. Argentina will play only its first group-stage match in Kansas City, while its next two matches will be played in Dallas. But the choice was not based only on the schedule.
Luis Martín explained that Dallas was evaluated because Argentina will play two group matches there. However, the available options did not fully convince the staff. He said it was difficult to find two training fields and nearby gym facilities that matched what the team needed.
Kansas City offered a more complete solution.
Argentina will train at the Compass Minerals National Performance Center, a high-level soccer training complex connected to MLS. Martín said the staff found the Kansas City training center during the inspection process and valued its conditions. He also noted that the United States national team will prepare there, which reinforces the level of the facility.
The final goal is not just convenience. It is control. Argentina wants a base where training, recovery, rest and internal logistics can operate without unnecessary complications.

What Kansas City offers as a World Cup city
Kansas City was officially founded on March 28, 1853. It is located in the Midwest, close to the geographic center of the United States, at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers.
AFA’s information describes Kansas City as a city with a total surface area of 826.29 square kilometers, including 815.71 square kilometers of land and 10.57 square kilometers of water. Its climate sits between humid subtropical and humid continental, with hot and humid summers.
That climate will matter during the World Cup. The tournament will be played in June and July, and teams will have to manage heat, humidity, travel and recovery. For Argentina, having an organized base with controlled facilities is part of that adaptation process.
Kansas City’s metropolitan area is one of the most important in its region, and the city is preparing for a major role during the World Cup. It will host Argentina’s debut, welcome thousands of international fans and operate one of the tournament’s key fan zones.
Argentina’s opening match and group-stage schedule
Argentina will begin its World Cup defense on Tuesday, June 16, against Algeria in Kansas City.
The match is scheduled for 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM PT in the United States, 8:00 PM in Mexico and 10:00 PM in Argentina.
After that opener, Lionel Scaloni’s team will move to Dallas for the final two matches of the group stage. Argentina will face Austria on Monday, June 22, at 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT in the United States, 12:00 PM in Mexico and 2:00 PM in Argentina.
The final group match will be against Jordan on Saturday, June 27, also in Dallas. That game is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM PT in the United States, 9:00 PM in Mexico and 11:00 PM in Argentina.
Even with two games in Dallas, Kansas City remains the base because it gave Argentina better overall working conditions.

Kansas City prepares for Argentina fans
The city is also preparing for the arrival of fans. Kansas City opened transportation passes for ConnectKC26, the regional transport network created for the World Cup. The system will connect the airport, the stadium, the FIFA Fan Festival and more than 15 key points across the metropolitan area.
The Fan Fest will be located at the lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial. It is expected to hold up to 25,000 people at a time and will serve as a central meeting point for watching matches, food, entertainment and World Cup activities.
For Argentina fans traveling to the United States, Kansas City will be more than the first stop. It will be the city where the defending champions open their campaign, where the team is based and where the World Cup journey begins.
Kansas City becomes part of Argentina’s title defense
Argentina’s choice of Kansas City shows how detailed World Cup preparation has become. The defending champions are not simply looking for a hotel and a training field. They are building an operational base.
The Origin Hotel gym, the added training-center facilities, the Compass Minerals National Performance Center, the family-visit tent and the transport logistics all point to the same objective: giving Argentina a stable, private and efficient environment during the tournament.
Kansas City will now carry a special role in the 2026 World Cup. It will be a host city, a fan destination and, most importantly for Argentina, the place where the defending champions begin their pursuit of another world title.
