Nets Beat Knicks in First Borough Battle of the Season
By: Kevin McLaughlin
BROOKLYN - The Brooklyn Nets take game one of the 4 game series for the “Battle of the Boroughs.” Over the past few years an interesting rivalry has been brewing between the two New York teams, especially after the Nets landed two marquee free agents this offseason (Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant), the same free agents the Knicks supposedly traded their best player (Kristaps Porzingis) to create cap space for.
Kyrie Irving, who was rumored to sign with the knicks for months heading into free agency, dropped 26 points and scored 5 of the 7 points in the last minute to come back from a 4 point deficit. The clutch performance from Kyrie, along with Brooklyn handing out free Kyrie Irving jerseys to the fans, is just salt in the wound for the Knicks franchise and fanbase.
Dating back to the New Jersey era, the Nets always seemed to be the little brother of the Knicks franchise. Now, after recent moves in free agency and player / coach development, it seems Brooklyn may have begun their quest to take over the town. Madison Square Garden will host game two of this divisional series on November 24th, with both teams looking to make a statement to the their city. Whether the Nets can “take over” the city of New York will continue to be debated, but at least one thing is for sure, we will have ourselves another scrappy round two in the Battle of the Boroughs.
